My Visit to Lakehurst Last Month

To lift your spirits after yesterday’s very sad news about Eureka being grounded, here is a photo of an airship that is still very much in the air.

This is the U.S. Navy’s MZ-3A, a modified A-170 blimp owned by the government and operated by a civilian contractor.  MZ-3A is described by the Navy as a “flying laboratory used to test sensors and multi-intelligence suites for DoD and other governmental agencies. The airship provides a slow moving, vibration free and low operating cost platform required for some Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance sensors.”

I was at Lakehurst last month working on a project that I will describe here in greater detail in the very near future.

My thanks to the JB-McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst public affairs sergeant who took this photo for the blog, and who was incredibly helpful, as always, with the recent project.

I always enjoy seeing the MZ-3A, it’s tail stripes never fail to remind one of the great Navy dirigibles of the past. It’s good to know the modern military is rethinking the use and viability of the airship.
